CBC/Radio-Canada is going Google! The Corporation will adopt Gmail as its new email system before April 2013. It’s the first step in implementing the Google “eco-system” to empower employees with new productivity tools.
“We’re excited to introduce a new email solution at CBC/Radio-Canada that will also allow us to adopt new productivity tools, while costing less to operate than our current email system,” says France Bigras, IT Executive Director and a member of the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). “We’ll be joining the ranks of other Canadian institutions and companies such as Celestica, Cossette Communication and the City of Edmonton who have committed to Google and are successfully operating “in the cloud,” she adds.
According to Fred Mattocks, the Chair of the TSB, “The move from GroupWise to Gmail is part of our overall strategic plan for the evolution of technology at CBC/Radio-Canada, and directly supports Strategy 2015. Moving to “email in the cloud” will allow us seamless access to email from a wide range of devices including tablets and smart phones, and the ability to share ideas, work differently and collaborate online with our colleagues. It’s part of our move to more effective, more modern and more digital tools for our employees, based on simpler, easier and cheaper solutions to our workplace needs.”
France adds, “Technical support staff and volunteers from across the organization will migrate to Gmail early in January. They’ll help us to work through any potential issues and ensure we’re ready to support a full migration in February and March. Current email in GroupWise will be automatically transferred to Gmail. We’re working to define the data transfer process for archived emails, taking into consideration our need to retain information. More on that to come within the next few weeks.”
Training on the new email system – and how to access archives – will be made available to staff across the country through a combination of online webinars, videos, lunch and learn sessions, and help from superusers and technical support teams. Where absolutely necessary, we will arrange classroom sessions.
Training on using the full Google “eco-system” of tools – to talk, chat, share, schedule, store, organize, collaborate, discover, and create – will be made available in the coming months.
