Last week, Joanne Steventon set out on a mission to capture what it’s like to be Ian Black. Technically, Ian Black (@BlacksWeather) is Ottawa’s in-house Climatologist, but his fans fondly refer to him as their go-to Weather Man.

-
At around 11:20 a.m. Ian records the 30-second weather spots that air until early afternoon.
-
-
This radio spots are heard in Ottawa and as far away as Kingston and Maniwaki.
-
-
After recording his radio spots, Ian then heads to his desk, decked out with four computer monitors.
-
-
In addition to radio and television, Ian shares his weather updates on twitter (@blacksweather). He now has almost 7000 followers. Can you see yourself on Ian’s tweetdeck? Ian says that he’s got a few followers that provide great photos for the evening broadcast.

The wardrobe room. We didn’t say this – but Ian takes up the most real estate. He says it’s because he has to store entire suits (people see his entire body on television, unlike his counterparts who site behind a desk). Ian’s shirts are hung up in order. When he’s done with one, he moves on to the next. A little bit of variety for the audience!

-
Around 2:30, Ian heads to the make-up room. The most relaxing part of his day, he says. Check out that chair! And you can’t see them, but there are also televisions along the wall.

At 3:30 p.m. Ian heads to the All in a Day radio studio for a weather hit.

Ian as a rock star? Maybe when the weather thing grows old…

-
A few onlookers take in the forecast from Sparks Street.

-
Two cameras record Ian’s hit at 5:30 p.m. on CBC News Ottawa. These camers are robotic – they’re operated from upsairs in the control room.

Lucy, Adrian and Ian have a quick laugh during the commercial break.

A real behind-the-scenes look at the TV broadcast. This is Rose our show director. She’s in charge.

What you don’t see when Ian’s not on camera…
If you have questions for Ian or if you would like to nominate a CBC Ottawa staffer that you would like Joanne to follow around for the day, post them below.

Great suggestion! I’ll share your suggestion with the team and hopefully we’ll be able to post something up soon!
I think that Waub Rice would be worthy of having Joanne follow him around for a day. I had the priviledge of being interviewd by Waub when my son went missing. Waub did an amazing job on the interview as I was not at my best. His professionalism and compassion was natural and he managed to get the best part of the interview and used it to make the public aware of the important issue.
Waub is a natural at his profession, he is a great member of the CBC news Ottawa.
